casablanca

Imagine this - the love of your life reappears after abandoning you years ago. She has a new man and they are in dire straits. You can win her back and undermine a greater cause, or you can help them both in a way that will surely ruin you. What would you do? This is the decision Rick Blaine must make in the 1942 movie Casablanca. Rick's character arc in many ways mirrors the involvement of the United States in World War II, as he shifts from a cynical isolationist to a daring opponent of the Nazi regime. Throughout all of this, he wrestles with the longing and heartache that accompany loving a woman enough to let her go.

At least he'll always have Paris.

In this post I will explore the timeless style of Casablanca, with traditional Moroccan architecture providing bursts of color. The musical backdrop accompanying these images pays homage to Rick's tumultuous relationship with Ilsa Lund.
